The Role of Women in Society :: Sociology History Females Gender Essays
The Role of Women in Society à à à à à The role women play in todayââ¬â¢s society is a drastic change from the previous role. Women used to be confined to the superiority of the man. Physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past. A womanââ¬â¢s role in todayââ¬â¢s society is more valued than ever before. à à à à à Women have always been essential to society. Fifty to seventy years ago, a woman was no more than a house wife, caregiver, and at their husbands beck and call. Women had no personal opinion, no voice, and no freedom. They were suppressed by the sociable beliefs of man. A womanââ¬â¢s respectable place was always behind the masculine frame of a man. In the past a womanââ¬â¢s inferiority was not voluntary but instilled by elder women, and/or force. Many, would like to know why? Why was a woman such a threat to a man? Was it just about manââ¬â¢s ability to control, and overpower a woman, or was there a serious threat? Well, everyone has there own opinion about the cause of the past oppression of woman, it is currently still a popular argument today. à à à à à Thanks to our strong, motivated, committed, dedicated, and determined women: who fought for the valued rights of woman everywhere. Without all the feminist, and woman activist women would probably still be oppress. Thank you to women like Eleanor Smeal, Bonnie Briggs, Maya Angleou, and Ms. Bensedrine, and Sadie Alexander (founder of DST). à à à à à Women today have excelled to unreachable heights. Today women are out in the workforce, the professional world, the military, and there are those that are still at home, but by choose. A womanââ¬â¢s value has skyrocketed over these past decades. A woman today can do anything a man can and more.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sing :: essays research papers
Maya Angeloââ¬â¢s, I know why the caged bird sing is an interesting and inspirational story. Although it had many unfortunate situation for Maya it seemed she always overcame her difficulties. As I read the book I stopped and put myself in her place. I felt her pain as she was walking down the isle in the church looking for the all colored bathroom, and she had no choice but to go to the bathroom right there and then. Her embarrassment really made me feel overwhelmed as I compared the situations of my life. In my lifeââ¬â¢s situation I often feel just like Maya. When I walk into a room and I do not see people of my color. I often feel uncomfortable and afraid to say anything . Her brother Bailey was her role model and support system when she was raped. I felt so sad when I read this portion of the story. I tried to visualize the pain Maya went through, but could not conceive the struggle she was faced as raped by her motherââ¬â¢s boyfriend at the age of eight. Maya kept to herself and was not able to communicate with others, It was when she decided to move back to Stamps that she began to come around. Stamps, for the most part was a very segregated town. In Stamps, her grandmother owned a convenient store. Her husband uncle Willie was crippled at an early age when his babysitter dropped him. Maya felt right at home in Stamps. Her abilities to develop through her hard work and educational values grew day by day. Although being black was often time difficult for her in Stamps, she overcame the hardships by allowing the world of reading and education influence her. I felt really connected with Maya during this period of her life. I figured she wanted to learned as much as she could and to welcome the world with open arms. Her lifestyle of strict discipline and religion was the foundation she had in her life. When Maya moved to St. Louis she felt a part of her stayed in Stamps, she was afraid of the changes that were happening in her life. She felt that St. Louis was a foreign country. She often felt the disconnection with St. Louis and could never get used to the different thing that was happening in her surroundings. As Maya went back to Stamps, she welcomed it back with open arms.

Change through Events in a Novel Essay
In many novels, characters experience first hand the challenges they must go through as the transition from who they portrayed to be in the beginning as opposed to how they change their personalities, actions, and life style in the end. In the novel, The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks, the author uses certain events from the novel to change the characters personalities and ways of life. This is demonstrated through the main characters Julie Barenson who changes from a nice, loving woman to an afraid and unstable woman because she finds out Richard is stalking her and Richard Franklin who changes from nice and an at times jealous person, to a crazy, possessive stalker because Julie doesnââ¬â¢t love him. By exploring these two characters, it is evident that change in characters through different events in the novel is depicted through how they change their lives, ways of action and personalities. During the early years of Julieââ¬â¢s life, she has many problems and is not stable. Julieââ¬â¢s mother is an alcoholic and they live in a trailer. Her father moves away to Minnesota when she is two year old. She runs away when she is sixteen and lives on the street until she meets Jim, who takes her to Swansboro and marries her. At the beginning of the novel, the author portrays Julie as a woman who has been through a lot, but does Ankoma-Mensa 2 not let that stop her from being a nice, loving person. Julie also moves on after Jimââ¬â¢s death, because it was a hard time for her, with regards to her past: ââ¬Å"Now when she thought of Jim, she remembered him with a smile, thankful that heââ¬â¢d been part of her life.â⬠(Sparks 1) She always helps other and does the best she can to be respectful and sincere to other characters. Unfortunately, Julie does not stay so nice and caring throughout the whole novel. This transition from being nice to becoming a scared is demonstrated when she realizes that Richard is stalking her. Julie becomes very afraid after she is informed that Richard is stalking her and she starts to act paranoid: ââ¬Å"So she did again and come up with the conclusion that Richard wasnââ¬â¢t lurking by. But is still didnââ¬â¢t help. She began to hyperventilate.â⬠(442) Even though Richard deserves the insults he receives from Julie, the reader does not expect her to try and hurt him in such means ways: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËI donââ¬â¢t want to talk to you.ââ¬â¢ She said, hating her plaintive tone. ââ¬ËWhy canââ¬â¢t you get that through your head?'â⬠(448) Julie ,herself, does not like how she is sounding and the way she is acting but she feels that the only way to get Richard to leave her alone, she has to be rude to him. Julie transforms from her regular personality beca use of what Richard is doing. Not only is Julieââ¬â¢s transformation in personality a big difference, but Richardââ¬â¢s transformation is even larger than expected. Richard, whose real name is Robert Bonham, is a man from Cleveland and is Julieââ¬â¢s boyfriend at the beginning of the novel. Richard, also, has been through a lot in his life just like Julie has. His father and mother were alcoholics, his mother is beat every night from his father and he hates his parents. Richard struggles because his parents die and he goes from house to house in search of a Ankoma-Mensa 3 family. In the beginning of the novel, the author portrays Richard as a caring and at times manipulative man, who has been through many struggles in his life, but unalike Julie, Richard allows his past to resurface in his future. Richardââ¬â¢s mothersââ¬â¢ struggles get to him and he allows them to interfere with his concept of how he and Julie should live: ââ¬Å"If Julie stayed, he knew she would grow weak, just as his mother had grown weak. And in time, there would be nothing to respect.â⬠(175) Richard feels that if Julie stays in the country, she will end up like his mother and he despises his mother. As well Richards manipulations are demonstrated when he tries to get Julie to feel guilty because she did not wear his necklace: â⬠Manipulated, as though heââ¬â¢d wanted her to promise that sheââ¬â¢d always start wearing the locket to work again and that she would feel guilty that she hadnââ¬â¢t.â⬠(143) Even though Richard personality is not perfect, he worsens near the end of the novel. Richard becomes obsessive and the reader finds out that he is a murderer. Richard kills his mom; dad, wife and the real man named Richard Franklin to steal his identity. As well, the reader finds out the Richard is abusive because he hits his wife: ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëstop acting crazyââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWhat did you say?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËOwâ⬠¦let me goâ⬠¦youââ¬â¢re hurting meâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ ââ¬ËWHAT DID YOU SAY?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËOwâ⬠¦pleaseâ⬠¦Ow!'â⬠(432) Richard hits his wife because he is a controlling person and wants her to do what he says. He also feels that he is the best thing for Julie even thought he is not and treats all women as if they are his mother, who is beaten by her father, and tries to control or change them to prevent them from his motherââ¬â¢s way of life: ââ¬Å"Just like his mother. The victim. Always the victim.â⬠(175) Richard becomes a stalker when Julie dumps him and starts to date Mike. Richard is goes crazy and Ankoma-Mensa 4 convinces himself that Julieââ¬â¢s hatred is love: ââ¬Å"Yes, he knows she cared for him, for werenââ¬â¢t anger and love opposite sides of the same coin? Great anger wasnââ¬â¢t possible without great loveâ⬠¦and sheââ¬â¢d been so angryâ⬠(433) Richard uses his mothers life as a bad example of how he wants to live not knowing that he is causing the women he loves to be like his mother: subject to abuse by a controlling man. Richard changes from how he was at the beginning of the book because Julie does not love him, farther demonstrating the change is characters through events in a novel. Like in many novels, The Guardian uses events in the novel to demonstrate how each character changes their personalities, actions and ways of life. This is demonstrated through Julieââ¬â¢s transformation from a nice, loving, stable woman to an afraid, hate-filled, vulnerable woman because Richard is stalking her, and as well, through Richardââ¬â¢s transformation from a nice, controlling at times man to a sick, twisted, crazy and controlling man because Julie doesnââ¬â¢t love him. Characters in novels either change for better or for worst depending of the events that have taken place. In The Guardianââ¬â¢s case, one of the characters transform into a hate-filled ,scornful person, whereas the other transforms into a evil criminal because the events were not positive ,but were negative.

English Assessment Plaster cast and Fresh bait The stories I have chosen to talk about today are Plaster Cast by Archimede Fusillo, and Fresh Bait by Sherryl Clark. I have chosen to talk about these particular stories, because the ways in which they are similar captured my interest when reading them. Both stories feel as if they are written from end to beginning. They unfold slowly, keeping the reader in rapt suspense, on the edge of their chair, until the very end, when the story takes its last breath to reveal to the reader the horrible, unforeseen truth. The authors of these two stories employed many techniques to create works that are similar in some ways, dissimilar in others. It is these different techniques I will talk to you about today. One of the most important elements of a short story is characterization. In both stories, the author intertwines the concepts; confusion and suspicion to portray their individual protagonists, letting out small details to intrigue the reader a nd make them wonder about the characters. In plaster cast, Miranda (the main protagonist) is a new art student entering gruesome sculptures into her school art show. uote ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re not fit for a school art showâ⬠pg49 Her character is slowly developed and revealed through these sculptures, that seem eerie and ââ¬Å"too lifelikeâ⬠for comfort. Similarly to Plaster Cast, the character traits of the main protagonist in Fresh Bait are revealed slowly. The unnamed character remains to the reader a mystery, as we are left to stumble slowly yet blindly after her on her strange journey. Similarly to Miranda, the anonymous hero in Fresh Bait seems somewhat strange to the people around her who cannot understand the peculiar things the does. uote ââ¬Å"I walked back a few paces, bent down and noted his number plate. â⬠Pg19 Structure Language Technique comparison The Technique in these stories is quite different. In fresh bait the language techniques mostly include adjectives, listing and a few similes and metaphors, quote ââ¬Å"Called up the list in my head again. Blue Holden new. Sales Forty-Fifty. Finger. â⬠Pg21. This quote is an example of listing. The language techniques in the plaster cast mostly include adjectives and repetition. Quote ââ¬Å"They could be living things. Breathing, pulsating, living things. â⬠Pg49

Adam And Eve The Duality Of Humanity Religion Essay
Adam And Eve The Duality Of Humanity Religion Essay Paradise Lostââ¬â¢s Adam is a rational, clever and trustworthy character who has an amazing rapport with the highest power, God. It can even be argued that before he fell, his was the epitome of humanity, as perfect a human as ever existed. He shares this trait with Eve who is the most perfect and complete woman. This view has been reciprocated by many religious denominations but each has interpreted it in their own unique ways; from Calvinists to puritans to Milton each has interpreted the story of Genesis in their own unique way. Like Adam who was perfect, to the belief that eve was flawed, each has built their own mythos around the story of the genesis of mankind. The Adam represented in Miltonââ¬â¢s Paradise Lost is an exceedingly rational being, and can understand greatly sophisticated and complex ideas nearly instantaneously. However this perfection hides several deep and critical flaws present within his character. His character and insight is demonstrated when after ob serving Raphaelââ¬â¢s descent into Eden, Adam orders eve to, ââ¬Å"go with speed, / And what thy stores contain, bring forth and pour / Abundance, fit to honor and receive / Our Heavââ¬â¢nly strangerâ⬠(V, 313-316). To which Eve answers, ââ¬Å"Adam, earthââ¬â¢s hallowed mould, / Of God inspirââ¬â¢d, small store will serve, where store, / All seasons, ripe for use hangs on the stalkâ⬠(V, 321-323). These word which at first seem stiff and of an overly formal method, nonetheless helps reveal the relationship of Adam and Eve. Adam is in charge, but his request for Eve to prepare a meal is not in any way dismissive. She understands that and her response, is in accord with that message. This transitory conversation is not that of a master and servant but of two people who hold themselves in equal regard. His relationship with Eve is not the only conversation between equals, as he also talks with Raphael as an equal. He converses with the archangel Raphael as an eq ual both, socially in his standing, and intellectually in his ability to clearly understand the meanings behind the Raphaelââ¬â¢s words. However this ends after Adamââ¬â¢s fall from the grace of god. After his fall Adam loses his pure intellect and his rationality leading him to brash and increasingly non-rational actions, stripping him of his ability to converse with the angels as an equal. Adamââ¬â¢s greatest flaw is his unequivocal love for his wife Eve. He falls I love merely upon seeing her for the first, and even confesses to the archangel Raphael that his attraction is nigh overwhelming. Though warned by Raphael to keep his dangerous emotions in check he completely disregards Raphaelââ¬â¢s earnest urgings. After Eve eats from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil, quickly devours a fruit from the same tree in order to prevent him from being separated from her even momentarily. Eve has become an indispensable companion in his life and he will do anything in order to prevent himself from being separated from his only love. His other major weakness is his insatiable curiosity. He manipulates the angel Raphael to extract more information from him,

Faculty of Businnes, Environment and Society Assignment
Faculty of Businnes, Environment and Society - Assignment Example This issue can lead to serious monetary and non-monetary repercussions for the company. In the legal sense, the company has displayed an unacceptable level of negligence and casualty in the management of standard of care which should have been exercised adequately by the company to ensure that it maintained its reputation as a socially responsible enterprise. As such, it is the legal duty of Choc Deluxe now to take care of the situation so that the derogatory impacts of the incidence can be lessened if not mitigated completely. Thus, both the aspects of financial and physical losses and harm are associated with this incidence. Not only ahs her tooth and lips dammed because of biting the nail present in the chocolates but also she has to incur a high cost of 20000 for treating her broken tooth and the cut in he r lips. Due to this, Choc Deluxe has to pay the monetary expenditures incurred in the treatment of the physical injuries and damages of the plaintiff, Lauren. In addition to this, Choc Deluxe should also issue a formal apology made to the plaintiff as a way of compensating for their negligence in non-monetary terms (Conaghan and Mansell, 2008).
